Types of Hamsters

Each of the three types of hamsters has their own unique characteristics. In order to determine what type of hamster would be right for you, you need to know a few things about each of the different hamster breeds. For example, the dwarf hamster is most common in pet stores. They are very cute and have very small feet, which make them easy to care for. However, they do have some requirements to keep them happy.

Type of Hamster - Dwarf Hamster

  • The dwarf hamster requires lots of water to stay healthy.
  • They also love to burrow and dig so providing them with a nice burrow will help them do well in their environment.
  • In order to prevent diseases from spreading, you should clean up any open dirt that they may have dug in their burrows regularly.
  • These types of hamsters are also very active so make sure you can provide plenty of toys for them to chew on.
  • You should have plenty of places for them to roam around and play in because these types of hamsters need large areas to run around in.
  • These types of hamsters are quiet so they don't get bored easily. Because they like to hide and burrow, they like to be able to climb and hide when they want to.
  • If you live in an apartment, it's important to get a hamster that can fit into a small space, because they may develop some problems.

If you have a larger apartment or house and are trying to fit them into a smaller space, make sure that they have a very secure enclosure for their safety. Make sure you get a small cage so they can get out if they feel threatened. Don't purchase a cage that is too large though, because hamsters love to climb so they could get stuck.

Type of Hamster - Oriental Hamster

  • The second most popular type of hamster is the Oriental hamster.
  • They are very nice to have around and can be very friendly.
  • However, these types of hamsters are usually housed in hamster cages and really need a lot of room.
  • When you are considering housing these types of hamsters, remember that their mouths are very small and this will mean that they will swallow their food whole and won't be able to chew or gnaw their way through the bars of the hamster cage.
  • Since these types of hamsters tend to be a little larger than the other two, you should be able to fit them into a smaller cage or even a pen.

Before you decide whether or not you are going to get a hamster for your home, it's time to research the pros and cons of each type. Take some time to learn about all of the different types of hamsters that are available and take your time before making a decision.
